You Have to {GET STARTED}! with 3 quick tips

Joseph Shields - Owner of Social Media Expeditors

You HAVE to start.  You just have to.  You cannot Get where you’re trying to go without at least lacing up the shoes, planting the feet, and kicking off that first step.

You know this goes for everything but we’re going to target something special right now.  We’re going to target Starting Your Social Media Presence and we’re going to target it because this is what I keep hearing over and over at networking meetings with local business owners: “I know I should be doing Social Media but I don’t know where to start or have the time.”  I get it!

You have a business so of course you don’t have the time (Any business owners reading this who feel like they have time to burn, please email me because I want to introduce you to my purple unicorn!)  No one ever broke down the massive world of Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn/Tumblr/Snapchat/Pintrest/Instagram/etc. for you and, with several millions of articles to sort through if you want to learn, how are you possibly supposed to figure it out?

Well, the thing is, you don’t need a ton of time and you don’t need to be an expert in anything.  All you NEED to do is start!

I’m serious.  POST ANYTHING.  Start up a Social Media page on any of the platforms.  Start up the most simple, basic Facebook page.  Start up the most simple, basic Twitter feed.  Write one single blog that’s 3 paragraphs long.  DO ANYTHING to get yourself started and you WILL be ahead of the curve and you WILL be making a difference for yourself.

Look, most people will never even make it that far.  Per the American Psychological Association, “20 percent of U.S. men and women are chronic procrastinators.”  Inc. Magazine tells us 92 percent of people that set goals never actually achieve them.  But you know what?  WHATEVER!  You’d don’t have to be in that group.  And here are a 3 things you can do to help you get started:

“Just to put it out there again, just take a step, any step.  You will have to refine it later.  You will have to link it into your greater strategy.  But, for now, get that boulder off your shoulders and just do something. “

1) DO ANYTHING!

This is the biggest step – the first one.  Like I wrote above, there’s a longer race to be run but, unless you take that first step, you are guaranteed never to get anywhere.  Think back to when you started your business: We’re you ready?  Did you know everything you needed to know to succeed?  NO!  Of course not.  But you still got started anyway and that’s what you have to do now.  In future posts I’ll give you some basic, simple starting points you can use.

2) KNOW WHY

Why are you doing this?  Why do you think you need a Facebook page (besides that Facebook has over 2 BILLION users, thousands of whom could be looking for exactly the services you offer)??  Why do you care about Social Media at all?

We can’t just do things because Jim down the street told us it’s a good idea (sorry Jim, I really do appreciate you getting the word out).  You need to know why Social Media Marketing is important for your business or you’re not going to do it (In case you need inspiration, here’s a quick list of reasons why you need to have your business engaged in Social Media Marketing).

3) GET OVER THE INITIAL JITTERS (WHAT’S THE WORST THAT COULD HAPPEN?)

For real, what do you think is the worst things that could happen if you started building your Social Media presence?  Are you going to get angry customers posting nasty comments?  People are going to think your posts look stupid?  You’re going to feel inferior when you can’t even figure out how to get a picture posted up on Twitter?

Hey, it’s okay.  You probably will get some nasty comments – though not as many as you fear (unless there are serious issues with how you’re serving your customers).  Some of your posts might look stupid (who cares?  You’re not going to tops any of these guys).  And yes, you’re going to spend five minutes at some point looking for a place to upload a photo when, in fact, the “Add Photo” button was right there in front of your face the whole time.

The point is, ‘whatever’.  Your worst fears will virtually never come even close to materializing into your worst realities.  And the ones that do are totally recoverable.

4) LAST VERSE, SAME AS THE FIRST

Just to put it out there again, just take a step, any step.  You will have to refine it later.  You will have to link it into your greater strategy.  But, for now, get that boulder off your shoulders and just do something.  And, if you need help, give us a call.  In truth, that might be the best first step you can take.
